写真と短編小説、三浦半島の海岸線からの追加画像。私は、隅田川や荒川や隣接する川の周辺の 東京西部デルタ地帯の現代の生活に、魅了されています。この地域の人々は、関東大震災や米軍の空襲、1960 年代の好景気を支えた過酷な労働事情など、様々な極限状況に耐えて来ました。 (そしてそれは現在も続いています。) 家の内と外があいまいな狭い通りや薄い壁の家が並ぶ界隈に暮らす彼らの強さとユーモア。そこからエネルギーをもらっていることに感謝しています。付随する短編小説は、キャプションのように画像と直接結びついているわけではないが、夢のような事実に基づいた出会いを描いており、近所での私の経験に「第三の」光を当てています。

Photographs and short stories from Tokyo’s waterside, with additional images from the Miura peninsula coastline. I’m particularly attracted by present-day life in the eastern Tokyo “delta”, around the Sumida, Arakawa and adjacent rivers. People around here have endured extreme situations such as the Great Kanto Earthquake, the US air raids, and the harsh labour conditions that created the economic boom of the 1960s (and continue today). I gratefully draw upon the energy from their strength and humour, amid the narrow streets and thin-walled houses that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors. The accompanying short stories relate dreamlike, fact-based encounters that, while not directly connected to the images in the manner of captions, combine to shine a “third” light on my experience of the neighbourhood.
